9 Grounding Techniques
What is grounding?
Grounding is the practice of bringing your attention back to the present moment while helping your body settle. It involves noticing what is happening right now, rather than getting pulled into spiralling thoughts or overwhelm. Some people find it helpful to picture roots growing into the ground, creating a sense of steadiness and support.
Why practise grounding?
Grounding can help you feel more anchored, support emotional regulation, and respond more intentionally instead of reacting automatically. It creates a pause that allows for clearer thinking and a greater sense of control.
When is a good time to use grounding?
Grounding is most effective when practised regularly, not only during stressful moments. With practice, it becomes easier to use when life feels overwhelming. It can be especially helpful when you are feeling anxious, overstimulated, caught in overthinking, or dealing with something unexpected.
There is no wrong time to practise grounding. It is a useful skill for everyday life, not just during moments of stress.
